Azavreti is a village in Akhalkalaki municipality, on the southern slope of the Trialeti range, on the Azavretiskhevi River, 2,100 m above sea level, 21 km from Akhalkalaki. One view links the village's name to the word azaveri ("a pack ox", per Saba) — supposedly pack oxen were bred at Azavreti. The village preserves a large medieval hall church, restored in the 1990s. One of its surviving bas-reliefs depicts St. Daniel in the lions' den. A Bolnisi cross also survives.
