Kochio Church

Church Samtskhe-Javakheti, Akhalkalaki district

Church Church

In the village of Kachio (Kochio) stands a 10th-century hall-type church, 24 kilometers from Akhalkalaki, 1,720 meters above sea level. The church's walls and vault are faced with well-worked blocks of reddish basalt. The facades and interior are richly carved (the windows, the capitals of the interior wall columns and so on). A cross is carved above the east and west windows, and bas-reliefs also appear on the facades. The church had entrances from the south and west; the west door is now walled up. The roof is entirely gone and the upper part of the south wall is broken down. The churchyard is full of old gravestones, one of which bears carved inscriptions.
