Near the village stands the 8th–9th-century hall church of the Dormition of St. Mary, a three-nave basilica built at the turn of the 8th–9th centuries. Among its frescoes are images of a richly dressed woman and man labeled in Asomtavruli: "Shotai and Iai". According to legend, the man is the great poet Shota Rustaveli and the woman his mother; the legend has it that Shota's aunt was married into the Kvabiskhevi valley and that Shota received his education here. The medieval "Demoti fortress" also survives.
