In the Akhaltsikhe district, near the village of Tiseli, the ruins of several old buildings remain. The village of Tiseli itself lies in the mountains, 5–6 kilometers west of Atskuri. One to one and a half kilometers southeast of the village, on the right bank of a small mountain river, stands the ruin of a domed church. Behind it (to the east) are bare cliffs, and on the river's other bank forested mountains. As a monument of art this building may be considered lost. Its western part is completely destroyed (approaching the church from the west, you seem to see the building in cross-section), and the stone facing has been stripped away entirely. From the surviving parts it is clear that the church was substantially repaired. Its dome differs from the rest of the building, being built of brick and worked stone; layers of different periods can be distinguished in the lower parts of the building as well. No written documents about the domed church of Tiseli survive, but judging by its plan and architectural features it must have been built at the end of the 14th century or the beginning of the 15th. East of the domed church, on a spur of rock, is the ruin of a fortress, and deep in the valley, some twenty minutes' walk away, a second, undomed church with a whole complex of associated buildings. This corner is among the most beautiful in all Samtskhe. Above the domed church the valley narrows and the forest comes down to the road; then the valley forks, and right there, at the start of the left branch, where the facing cliffs draw close together, the undomed church just mentioned suddenly appears. It stands on the right, on a step of a wall-like sheer cliff. The enclosure wall, which comes down to the roadside, the approach path within that wall, and the other buildings are buried in vegetation and moss. At first you can hardly tell the natural rocks from the ruined buildings. Most of the chambers are now underground; without thorough clearing and excavation little can be made out here. The church itself is comparatively well preserved. It stands with walls and vault intact, on a specially built platform. The walls are of dressed stone. On the west is a square gateway, whose great star-shaped vault draws attention; finer examples of such vaulting can be seen in the gateway of the Zarzma church and in Zarzma's bell tower. On the south side a burial chamber is built against the church. Outside the church has no decoration at all, but inside it is painted, and the painting can still be made out well. The undomed church of Tiseli must likewise have been built in the 14th–15th centuries. Evidently a monastery stood here.
