Okros Chardakhi (the Golden Pavilion) — the residence of the kings of Imereti in Kutaisi — stands on the right bank of the Rioni, between today's Rustaveli and White bridges. The royal residence was repeatedly damaged in the 17th century during the attacks of Levan II Dadiani, and by the 1770s it was already abandoned. It was partly restored by King Solomon II. In the 19th century only a small house, the court church and the bell tower survived of the residence's buildings. From 1810 Okros Chardakhi became the property of the Russian treasury. In 1830 it was assigned to Levan Dadiani, ruler of Samegrelo, and later bought by the Tumanishvilis and the Akopashvilis. From 1851 it was designated the residence of the inspector of the Kutaisi gymnasium, and in 1891 the educational department acquired the building as a church for the gymnasium's staff.
