Tsopi fortress is a medieval stronghold in eastern Georgia, in Kvemo Kartli, in historical Somkhiti, on the left bank of the Banoshistskali (ancient Khozhirna) River, 7 km west of the village of Sadakhlo in present-day Marneuli municipality. Traces of human life around Tsopi fortress are attested from the Lower Palaeolithic: a ruined cave here is a Mousterian-era dwelling. In the fortress's environs there are also settlements of the Upper Palaeolithic and Eneolithic, and of the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages. Tsopi fortress functioned in the 6th–13th centuries. The stronghold is built on a rocky mountain. The ruins of the upper fortress survive, along with fragments of the enclosure wall that once ringed a large area of the rocky slope. The upper fortress holds 2 chambers and 4 semicircular bastions, along with the remains of dwelling complexes and the ruins of a small church. In the rock gate, in the fabric of the rampart and in other parts, earlier "cyclopean" walls were reused. By the fortress is an abandoned village, preserving two hall-type churches dated to the 6th–7th centuries.
