According to tradition, the monastery was first meant to be built on a high mountain across the river; but when the building materials were carried up, the next day they were gone. After a long search, the materials were found neatly stacked in the valley of the Vere River. This miracle was ascribed to divine providence, and it was decided to build the church on that very spot. There is a view that Queen Tamar used to come here in summer to rest.
