In 1920 an earthquake damaged the building. The interior had been painted in the second half of the 19th century. In the Soviet period the church housed the Gori music school. In 1950 the interior walls were whitewashed, covering the paintings. In the 1990s the building was returned to the Georgian Orthodox Church. In 2003 works were carried out in the church: the frescoes were scraped off and several interior details demolished, destroying among other things the famous Catholic fresco of the Mother of God of the Gori church.
