The narrow defile of Dariali has been known in history since ancient times: the northern road passed through here — today called the Georgian Military Road. This road held special political and strategic importance for the old kingdom of Georgia (Iberia), whose capital Mtskheta stood at the crossroads of the Aragvi and Mtkvari, and this narrow, difficult Aragvi route was locked shut by the gates of Dariali.
