The archaeological study of Dmanisi began in 1936 (led by L. Muskhelishvili and V. Japaridze) and continues to this day. The Dmanisi historical-architectural museum-reserve was founded in 1983 and since 2006 has been part of the Georgian National Museum. It presents the medieval town site and a geological layer dated to 1.8 million years ago.
