The village of Ikvi itself no longer exists; its people resettled in Samgori. Under the southwestern arch, on a slab to the left of the niche, is a relief image of a flowering cross and an Asomtavruli inscription mentioning the ktetor, Father Arseni. By the palaeography of the inscription and the stylistic analysis of the building, the church dates to the first half of the 11th century. In 1939–1940 restoration works were carried out by the Directorate of Arts under the Council of People's Commissars of the Georgian SSR (restorers N. Chubinashvili and V. Tsilosani): the facades and the drum of the dome were restored, a substructure was created on the south side, and the mountainside on the north was reinforced with a wall.
