With the consent of the Georgian Patriarchate and the permission of the Ministry of Culture, Monument Protection and Sport, archaeological work on the monument's territory was carried out by Rezo Khvistani, senior researcher of the classical and medieval sector of the Otar Lordkipanidze Institute of Archaeology of the Georgian National Museum. The excavations revealed numerous fragments of building ceramics (flat and bent-edged roof tiles, painted red and unpainted) and kitchen ceramics (glazed and unglazed vessels), as well as glass vessels, showing that the church functioned continuously from its construction until the late Middle Ages (17th–18th centuries).
