The complex's name is connected with the Maghaladze (Maghalashvili) family, feudal lords who rose to prominence in the 15th century. In its day the family produced many distinguished figures. They were close to the royal court and the church hierarchy and took an active part in the political life of the kingdom of Kartli. The Maghaladzes reached the height of their power in the second half of the 17th century.
