The complex was created in the time of the Lezgin raids. It served the family of Tamaz Kareli both as a defensive structure and as a dwelling. According to the Mkhedruli inscriptions surviving on its walls, in 1754 the owner added a truncated elliptical tower on the west and east sides of the octagonal tower, and in 1758 added a fourth tower on the east.
