King Vakhtang died in the fortress town of Ujarma in 502 from a wound received in a battle with the Persians: "thus passed away that lion of lions and giant of giants." The brilliant choice of site for the fortress town of Ujarma and its overall composition, the grand, plain, spirited forms of its buildings, the refined taste of its architectural forms and details and the accomplished technique of its construction make Ujarma one of the finest and most distinctive monuments of Georgian fortress building.
