The monastery takes its name from the St. George of Kozipa near Jerusalem. The churches were built at different times but stand tightly together, forming a single complex. On stylistic grounds construction began in the 8th–9th centuries. Building at the Gugomi complex was especially intensive in the 13th century, as confirmed by the stylistic analysis of the main buildings (the Church of the Mother of God, the enclosure wall) and by the inscription on the arch of the wall's "outer gate". Construction was probably completed in the 15th–16th centuries
