The original name of the Kvareltskali pillars complex, like the old toponymy of the village's surroundings, has not survived. It seems the valley's old population died out in the ceaseless warfare of the late Middle Ages (Shah Abbas's campaigns, the Lezgin raids), and with them the toponymy was lost. The present inhabitants of the village of Kvareltskali are descendants of Pshavs who settled here in the 19th century. The newly settled Pshavs built tall, tower-like dwellings, for which reason the village was at first called "Koshkebi" (the Towers). It is also noteworthy that on Vakhushti Batonishvili's map a village called Kortskali is marked on the site of today's Kvareltskali
