Little has been written about Tsaishi. It appears that the Tsaishi church was an episcopal cathedral; direct evidence in historical documents survives only from the 15th century, but there are indications suggesting the existence of the Tsaishi bishopric from the early feudal era. Byzantine writers preserve a geographical name that no longer survives, for which Academician Kaukhchishvili found a match: among the four bishoprics of the eparchy of Lazica subordinate to the Patriarch of Constantinople, named in the notitiae of the 6th–9th centuries, he links the bishopric of Saisi with Tsaishi
