Pirghebuli is a monument of Georgian architecture — a 13th-century monastery complex of the Mother of God, 10 km southwest of Tetritskaro on the left bank of the Khrami River. The complex's central building survives — the great church which, according to fragments and an inscription, was built in the reign of Rusudan (1222–1245). The church was painted inside; the outer walls bear inscriptions, one of which records that in the 17th century Elise Saginashvili, bishop of Tbilisi, added a gateway and burial vault on the church's south side (now destroyed). The church was ringed by an enclosure wall incorporating a three-story bell tower (2 stories remain), whose first story served as the gate. Southwest of the church are the remains of a large building. The caves set in the cliffs were evidently used as monks' cells. Above the church, on the slope, is a hall church of the late period.
