Church Church

Opposite the town of Gori, between the Trialeti mountains and the bank of the Mtkvari, rises Mount Gorijvari, on which stands the ancient church of Gorijvari. At the beginning of the 4th century a cross was raised on the mountaintop, and it has been called Gorijvari ever since. The church bears the name of St. George. As historical materials of the last century show, two churches once stood on Gorijvari, one of them a building of the 8th–9th centuries — confirmed by the archaeological excavations of 1988. On the territory of the Gorijvari monastery, according to the historian Vakhushti, the head of St. George is buried. The second church was a building of the late period. The earthquake of 1920 destroyed Gorijvari and its surroundings completely. In 1978–1988 the Gorijvari church was rebuilt; its paintings were executed by the artist Nodar Abramishvili, and the church was consecrated by the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II. Near Gorijvari is a healing spring known since ancient times.
