The Zemo Khodasheni monastery was founded in the 16th century by Levan, king of Kakheti (1520–74), and his son Alexander II (1574–1605). According to the inscription surviving on the west facade of the Annunciation church, the Beraant fortress (a wine cellar with a tower) and the church's western annex date to 1760–1784. The Beraant fortress was built by a certain Kozmanber, who came "from the Philotheou monastery on the Holy Mountain to the Annunciation church of the village of Sakhodasheni, which was donated to the blessed King Alexander, as steward and servant of the church"
