The church of St. Stephen the Protomartyr, built at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi, at the most holy site of the Georgians' baptism, is one of the oldest in Mtskheta. From the name of the place, the Stepantsminda church is also known by the name of Antioch. As the "Kartlis Tskhovreba" relates, it was built in the 4th–5th centuries by King Archil — great-grandson of St. King Mirian and grandfather of St. King Vakhtang Gorgasali — in thanksgiving to God after the expulsion of the Persians: "Then King Archil built the church of Stepantsminda at Mtskheta, at the gates of the Aragvi."
