Several historical monuments stand on this territory: Armaztsikhe (Bagineti), Armazi fortress, Armaziskhevi and the Armazi Church of the Mother of God. These similar names often cause people to confuse the monuments, so let us distinguish them here: In the valley of the Armaziskhevi River are two monuments: the Monastery of the Mother of God and Armazi fortress, about one kilometer apart. Armaziskhevi lies at the confluence of the Armaziskhevi and the Mtkvari. This was once the residence of the pitiakhshes; an open-air museum has now been created there. Bagineti, that is Armaztsikhe (not Armazi fortress), lies further east than the monuments listed above. On this spot the idol of Armazi once stood.
