A feudal fortress on the right bank of the Mtkvari, near the village of Atskuri, 30 kilometers from Borjomi. It is first mentioned in the chronicles in the mid-11th century. Atskuri fortress defended the Borjomi valley from the south. In the second half of the 16th century it was taken by the Ottomans. In 1770 a joint Russian-Georgian army besieged it but failed to take it. In 1829, under the Treaty of Adrianople, it was freed from Ottoman rule.
