One of the principal objects of veneration of the Akhali Shuamta monastery is the Khakhuli icon of the Mother of God, which stood before the chancel screen on the right. The painted image of the Virgin and Child, of the Hodegetria type, is overlaid with gold and precious stones (rubies, turquoise, diamonds and pearls). The icon holds 44 holy relics on its back. Today it is kept in the treasury of the Georgian State Museum of Fine Arts in Tbilisi.
