Akhatani St.Ioane's Church

Church Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Mtsketa district

Church Church

The St. John the Baptist church is a slightly elongated rectangle in plan, ending on the east in a semicircular projecting apse (10.7 × 6 m). It is built of unworked sandstone and square Georgian brick; the walls are mainly sandstone, while the conch, vault, arches and cornice are of brick. The entrances are on the south and north, at the middle of the nave, both doors crowned with semicircular tympana. Before the north entrance is a small gabled porch covered inside with a semicircular vault. On the axis of the east apse is a wide, tall arched window flanked by a small rectangular niche on either side.
