The restoration begun in the 1980s was halted in 1990 for well-known reasons and resumed in 2005. It is now complete, and a residence for the monks is under construction. In the early 1980s an archaeological expedition discovered in the church wall a stela whose carved inscription is considered one of the oldest examples of the Georgian alphabet (roughly 4th century). It is now kept in the Janashia State Museum.
