Church Church

The Ghvtaeba church of Akhmeta is a church in the town of Akhmeta, Akhmeta municipality. It stands on the town's northeastern edge, in the cemetery, and dates to the second half of the 6th century. Within the rectangle of the building's plan are three naves, though the church's main space is formed only by the central and northern naves: the southern nave is separated from the central one by a wall and connects to it through a single narrow opening. An annex adjoins the church along its full western side, connected only with the central and southern naves. The building is of cobblestone; the outer corners, arches, pilasters, door jambs, window frames and cornice are laid in well-dressed travertine. The church is badly damaged: the vault of the central nave, the conch arch and the upper parts of the long walls have collapsed, much of the southern nave's vault and south wall is destroyed, the southern edge of the western annex's vault has fallen, and much of the facades has lost its facing.
