Akhmeta is a town in Georgia, the administrative center of Akhmeta municipality. It lies on the right side of the Alazani River, 567 m above sea level. Akhmeta is mentioned as a significant settlement from the 1740s. According to Vakhushti Bagrationi, Akhmeta was famed for its excellent wine. During the Lezgin raids battles were often fought at Akhmeta. It was declared a town in 1966. Population 8,600 (2002). The town has industrial enterprises and healthcare, educational and cultural institutions.
