Testimony to the high spirituality of the Georgians' ancestors are the hermits' caves on the slopes of Mkinvartsveri (Mount Kazbek), whose names — Naberali, the Monks' Bath, Betlemi — survive to this day. The tradition of Betlemi inspired St. Ilia the Righteous to base one of his poems, "The Hermit", upon it. There is a report that Moses' tabernacle and the Savior's cradle were kept in the Betlemi cave. Holy, God-clad fathers pursued the monastic struggle there from the 6th century. Betlemi lies higher above sea level than any other Orthodox church in the world, at 4,100 meters.
