The palace was first built near the Martvili church, in the village of Salkhino, during the rule of Levan V Dadiani (1804–1840), father of David Dadiani, on the site of an earlier modest royal residence, though the building took its final form much later. The building materials were hauled here by peasants, requiring 100 pairs of oxen and buffalo harnessed to carts.
