Monastery Monastery

Kvatakhevi was considered the principal monastery of Kartli and enjoyed the patronage of the nobles. In the view of Ioseliani and some historians, Kvatakhevi was a convent until the 15th century, after which a monastery for monks was founded (though no evidence confirms this). In 1386, during another of Timur's campaigns, the monastery was sacked: "they carried off the vessels and took from the monastery's treasuries no small wealth, for that monastery was very rich"; the "monastics, many fathers and mothers, nobles and priests and deacons" sheltering in the monastery, together with villagers who had secretly come up, were savagely attacked, and when they refused to renounce Christianity, all were locked in together and the church was set on fire.
