The St. George fortress of Zhinvali was part of the system of the ancient town of Zhinvali. Its main part dates to the 12th–14th centuries, with portions from the 17th–18th centuries. It was excavated in 1975–1976 by the Zhinvali archaeological expedition of the Iv. Javakhishvili Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography (led by R. Ramishvili).
