Excavated in 1972–74 by the Zhinvali archaeological expedition of the Iv. Javakhishvili Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography (led by R. Ramishvili). In 1984 a special scientific restoration workshop moved the tower and enclosure wall and re-erected them near the townlet of Zhinvali.
