Satanjo castle

Castle/Tower Abkhazia, Gali district

Castle/Tower Castle/Tower

On the right side of the Enguri River, on a high mountaintop, rises a fortress called Satanjo (in S. Makalatia's view, "the word satanjo derives from the term 'tanji', meaning a boundary marker"). So convenient a site was chosen for the fortress that it is visible from every side. It commands not only the Enguri valley but the whole Colchian plain, down to the seashore. This highly important lookout point must have been a key strategic object in the chain of strongholds passing through here. Unfortunately the chronicles say nothing of its importance or of the wars it endured.
