In the early and High Middle Ages the Okumistskali valley was part of the duchy of Egrisi (according to Iv. Javakhishvili, of Sabediano). In the late Middle Ages it belonged first to the principality of Samegrelo, and from the turn of the 17th–18th centuries until union with Russia, to the noble domain of Samurzakano.
