Monastery Monastery

The paintings of the Ubisi church preserve unique examples of the Georgian school of painting. They were executed in the 14th century and, according to Sh. Amiranashvili's research, belong to the painter Damiane, as shown by the inscription surviving in the lower part of the "Last Supper" composition. Damiane was a great painter of his day; the paintings of the southwestern nave of the Khobi basilica and of the Sori monastery (Racha) are also in his hand. In the view of Academician V. Beridze, however, the church was painted by Damiane's pupil Gerasime, with the master directing how the church should be painted.
