The name Sioni derives from the holy Mount Zion in Jerusalem; it is a Hebrew word meaning "sunny". Georgia has many churches named Sioni, all dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, and among them the Sioni cathedral of Tbilisi holds special historical significance. The rector of the Sioni cathedral bears the title of protopresbyter.
