It lies at the confluence of the Armaziskhevi and the Mtkvari. This was once the residence of the rulers of Kartli — the pitiakhshes; an open-air museum has now been created here. By function the remains include fortifications (a rampart wall, towers, bastions, a rock gate), palace or temple structures (a columned hall and the remains of contemporary buildings), utility buildings (a wine cellar), sanitary-technical works (a bath, a water conduit), burials (a mausoleum-type vault, a sarcophagus) and cult monuments (the pedestal of the idol of Armazi, an altar). A wealth of objects has been found — daggers, jewelry, coins, horseman's and horse trappings and so on. The material dates from the 1st century AD to the Middle Ages.
