The Melouri cave is by its scale one of the largest caves in Georgia. The way down opens at the bottom of a collapse funnel 8–10 meters deep and descends to a depth of 15 m among gigantic fallen limestone boulders. At first movement in the cave is rather difficult, but because the cave is distinguished by a dense network of fissures, spacious chambers form where they intersect (100 × 40 × 30 m). Beyond the chambers, over several kilometers, a canyon-like passage has formed, through which a permanent stream flows. Moving through the canyon, this stream creates rapids and waterfalls along the way, and in the final stretch a siphon lake. The cave's front section is characterized by chemical deposits: stalactites and large stalagmites. Bats, spiders and beetles live in the cave. The cave has many unexplored corridors and branches whose study remains a subject for further research. The Melouri cave is not too difficult to pass; any healthy adult can visit it — but only accompanied by an experienced guide. Seeing the cave takes 8–9 hours. Necessary equipment: a helmet with a light, and high, thick-soled, waterproof footwear.
