The protection and rescue of Dartlo, a medieval architectural reserve, will be another large-scale project of 2012–2013. In this historic village of Pirikita gorge in Tusheti, Akhmeta municipality, the historic dwelling monuments will be returned to their original appearance using traditional materials. Under a new concept, Dartlo's historical, museum and cult-ritual zone will be created; rehabilitation will be carried out in the old village and the hall-type church of St. George will be restored. In parallel with the restoration of the antiquities, tourist infrastructure will be created: new buildings will be erected, modern yet blended with Dartlo's inimitable landscape — a cafe, souvenir shops and a camping zone with a purpose-built car park, an open-air dining area and public conveniences. The rehabilitation of Dartlo is being carried out on the President's initiative, within the Kakheti development program, financed by the World Bank. Dartlo's 70 historic medieval dwellings are today in the gravest condition. Over the centuries, through precipitation, natural disasters, general neglect and improper repairs, the architectural complex changed its appearance and was gradually being destroyed… …In 2008, within the state program for the protection and rescue of cultural heritage, the full documentation of Dartlo's historic monuments was financed. During many years of design work every building was measured, photographed and studied. The working group of architect-restorers produced a substantial document that will underpin the start of physical works in Dartlo. The project will be carried out over 15 months. The Dartlo architectural reserve will prolong its life for many centuries more and will be a superb place for travel, recreation and the presentation of the country's historic face. Within the festive events of "Tushetoba 2012", the majoritarian deputy of Akhmeta municipality Petre Tsiskarishvili and Petre Kankava, chief adviser to the director general of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation, presented the project's details to the people of Dartlo and congratulated them on the start of the village's renewal.
