Historical records about the Kvashveti church of Gurjaani are scant. Grounds for dating it are provided by the gravestones set into the tympanum and sides of the south entrance, one of which reads "u p" — that is, 1792. Naturally the church must have been built at least some ten years after that date. The architectural features themselves also point to the period of construction. V. Beridze therefore assigns its building to the very end of the 18th century or the beginning of the 19th.
